How to care for UGGs

UGGs have long been loved for their warmth and comfort. Over time they have transitioned to an icon of fashion, making their way out of the loungeroom and onto the streets.

As durable as they are, they still require proper care to maintain their quality. From stains to keeping the insides plushy and odour-free, a little love will go a long way towards making sure your UGGs last.

Whether dealing with everyday dirt or giving them a deep clean, this guide gives a few simple DIY steps to ensure your UGG boots and slippers stay cozy and looking great.

How to clean UGGs

Removing liquid stains like water, oil and mud

  1. Take some plain white chalk and rub it over the stained areas - leaving overnight.

  2. The following day, use a soft brush, or old toothbrush to gently wipe off the excess chalk. Then, rub the affected area against a clean area of the sheepskin to remove any remaining chalk residue.

Other Stains

  1. For tougher stains like pen marks, use a colourless gum eraser to gently buff the stain away.

  2. For stubborn marks, a very light sandpaper to very gently buff the area, taking care not to damage the sheepskin.

Cleaning the inside of UGG boots

Keep the insides of your UGG footwear clean and smelling fresh, make sure your feet are clean and dry before slipping them on. If it gets to a point where you can find your UGGs by smell, here are some steps to take to freshen them up.

Deep cleaning

  1. Lightly dampen a cloth with water and wipe the inside of the boot, starting with plain water to avoid stripping the wool of its natural lanolin.

  2. Allow the boots to dry in a shady area with plenty of airflow for around two days, making sure they’re completely dry before wearing them again.

  3. If the inside of the boot is still dirty, use a damp cloth with mild soap or a specialist wool detergent to clean the interior. Rinse with a clean, damp cloth to remove soap residue. Repeat the drying process.

Getting rid of odours

  1. Grab some baking soda and sprinkle into your boots – leaving overnight. Shake or gently vacuum the boots the next day to remove any excess baking soda.

  2. Consider using a specialized spray to freshen the interior and prevent odours from building up.

  3. When you’re not wearing your UGGs, store them in a cool, dry well-ventilated area to reduce the risks of moisture and bacteria.
